Greyhounds Begin Their New Life We call these special days in the life of a racing Greyhound, Retirement Days because it's the day they actually get to retire and start their new life as pets. GPA Northwest has received over 100 Greyhounds in the last year but most of them have come to us a few at a time as the local owners and breeders released their dogs to us. We have not needed to take large loads of Greyhounds into the program for quite some time but our volunteers and foster homes all remember how it's done and everyone stepped in to do their part. If you have not participated in welcoming a Greyhound into retirement, it's a real treat. You get to see them for the first time learning what it's like to sleep on big soft blankets, what it's like to have a Spa treatment and then get hugged and petted as they are dried. The dogs are usually excited but soon after the rush of activity, they are content to take a nap in their kennels or just rest their head on someone's shoulder.
