Casper's Story

caspernewhead

Casper came to GPA Northwest as a very playful 3-year old who loves people, other dogs and everything in life.  He's very curious about his surroundings and puts his nose to work wherever he goes.  He is affectionate and loves to be petted and have his coat brushed.  Casper is quite the talker as he usually always has something to say, however, he is not a barker.  He is very much a running machine.  He loves to run and will run all by himself but enjoys a good run with other Greyhounds as well.  This boy is truly a wonderful dog and would be a joy to have in any household.

Casper suffers from epilepsy and has seizures in clusters, one right after another, which is very dangerous if not controlled.  He has been evaluated by a veterinary neurologist and after extensive testing, the cause of Casper's seizures is diagnosed as idiopathic epilepsy. This means that there is no underlying disease and the seizures are of unknown cause. Casper also has a low thyroid and is on medication to correct his thyroid levels.

Casper had a rough start when he first came to GPA Northwest but now, with the addition of Potassium Bromide to his Phenobarbital treatment, Casper is doing much better.  He is easier to manage during a seizure and the seizures are months and months apart from each other.  As a result, Casper is a much happier dog and is able to enjoy things that dogs like to do, such as long walks, being with other Greyhounds, running in the backyard, and trips in the car.  Although seizures cannot usually be completely stopped, they can be well controlled, as they are now, and Casper can continue to live a happy, healthy life.

Casper has found himself a very loving and devoted family to love him for the rest of his life.  He was adopted into a home where he has a beautifully shaded backyard where he can run, a wonderful, accepting Greyhound brother to pal around with, and a couple that absolutely love him and will provide and care for him.  Casper has settled into his new home at record speed and is doing very well.  Happy endings, such as this, is what GPA Northwest is all about.
