Looking to foster?
The Fostering Process
Fostering is the heart of our adoption group. Rather than place Greyhounds new to our program directly in a home, our experience shows the advantage of giving them time in an experienced foster home an average of 3 to 6 weeks. Most foster dogs recently retired from racing and some were released by owners who could no longer care for them.
We are looking specifically for Greyhound-experienced foster homes, either from previous adoptions or volunteering or other significant experience with Greyhounds or closely-related sight hounds.
You are trained and supported by a foster coordinator. Contact our Foster Coordinator to learn more about becoming a foster home. In addition to support, we provide foster homes with dog food and continue responsible for most medical costs for the foster dog. Click here to see our Foster Manual.
Why Foster?
You help a retired racer transition to life as a house dog.
You’ll be providing invaluable insight into the Greyhound’s personality to help with placement in the perfect adoptive home.
Fostering is a temporary commitment with permanent rewards.
As a Foster parent, you will teach your foster Greyhound:
Housetraining.
Becoming comfortable with stairs, glass doors and other items in a home.
Appropriate behavior indoors – and outdoors.
Playing well with children and adults.
Walking on a leash without pulling.

Foster parents must provide their foster Greyhound:

Good food – which we provide.
Continuing medications or physical restrictions the foster may need.
Soft and comfy beds.
LOTS of love, guidance, supervision and training.
